According to West Bengal's education minister, Bratya Basu, pupils are free to select their mother tongue, and the state won't get involved.

"A pupil may select their first language at will. Bengali is an option for the first language in Kolkata. You have the option of selecting Nepali as your first language in the Darjeeling hills. A student may select Alchiki or Rajbanshi as their first language in some parts of the state. As a first language, you can choose Urdu as well, according to Basu.
